What Child Is This

The release of this song was the culmination of a year full of work. We spent 2020 locked in a house working on original music, which was almost ready to be released to the world. But we wanted to start off with a bit of something familiar.

As the holidays approached I (Jordan) was working on some arrangements for a Christmas album for a friend of mine. It was supposed to be an acoustic album at the time so, with that in mind, I started to think of a new arrangement of an old classic. As I was writing the music, I knew something wasn’t quite fitting. I was thinking of a vocal duet more than hearing a single voice. When we decided that my friends album should go in a less acoustic direction, I knew exactly where the arrangement of “What Child Is This” belonged.

A Friendly Message

You can hear us struggling to keep our composure for this video. Matthiessen stopped by to pick up some presents for his family that Emily had made, and we asked him to help us out with a little promo video for the new song. Somehow we landed on the idea that he should go outside and act like he walked all the way to our house to say he liked the song. It turned out way funnier than we thought, which is 100% thanks to Matthiessen being a silly guy. This was all just one take of him with the start of an idea in his head, and him just running with it.

The longest part of filming was getting his phone to get our song on it. Apple Music hasn’t updated our band name yet, which was originally “The Willohs” (I know terrible), so he couldn’t play it on there. Without him having a Spotify account we had to listen to the “What Child Is This, Wiloh” playlist, and at least 2 ads before the song finally came up.
